Reputation – HCPs: ABPI Code of Practice and Disclosure UK

Read more about how healthcare professionals view the relationship between pharmaceutical industry and the healthcare sector

HCPs are positive about the ABPI Code of Practice

The ABPI Code of Practice sets out the requirements the industry must comply with and supports companies’ commitment to self-regulation and to operating in a professional, ethical and transparent manner.

Awareness of the ABPI Code among HCPs has increased. Almost seven in ten HCPs in this study are now aware of it. Most HCPs who know at least a little about the ABPI Code have a positive opinion of it. About eight in ten see it as relevant. Seven in ten believe it benefits patients and is useful. Additionally, these HCPs feel it ensures transparency, credibility, easy access, appropriate marketing of medicines, and open engagement with stakeholders.

The ABPI Disclosure UK Database is slightly more well known by HCPs in 2024. HCPs recognise reasons why peers may not disclose and cite perceived barriers to transparency

The Disclosure UK database was created by the ABPI to make the relationship between the pharmaceutical industry and HCPs  or healthcare organisations (HCOs) open and transparent to the public. Only two in ten HCPs know about it very well or a fair amount, while another two in ten know a little about it. Approximately two in ten HCPs have never heard of it.

Among those familiar with the database, over one in ten gave permission to disclose payments or benefits as part of the initiative. Concerns about privacy, peer opinions, patient perceptions, and limited knowledge of Disclosure UK are seen as the main reasons other HCPs may not disclose payments. Suggestions to encourage disclosure include enhancing HCPs' knowledge, improving information access, and implementing policies for transparency.
